The word Metaverse is here to stay, but very vague for most people. Even people in the marketing industry are having difficulties to understand where to publish their clients’ virtual shops. So which metaverse is the real one?
You might be seeing there is a new project released in the crypto gaming market nearly every day. Each of them is claiming that they are the metaverse. Well, this is partially correct, but they are not the whole thing. They will be a part of it.
Each game has its own environment and servers. When you connect to a server, you end up in a single isolated environment. So how can you move one item that you really like from that game to another one? Well, this is where the term Metaverse kicks in.
Metaverse will be the “contract” and a “standard” in the industry to allow every environment to talk to each other. This standard will organically grow and shape in the near future. We know that Meta, formerly known as Facebook, wants to lead the industry to set the standards. One way or another, the standards will be there.
Those standards will allow the game developers to use items from a certain blockchain. A unique item in a game, such as a sword will be stored as an NFT. I am sure that you are aware of NFTs, but not so sure that you know an NFT is only stored in a single blockchain, such as Avalanche. What if you want to move your Sword stored as an NFT on Avalanche blockchain from Game X to Game Y which is using BSC as its NFT storage service? This is where we should start talking about “Interoperability”.
Interoperability
An interoperable mechanism allows a crypto asset to be moved from one chain to another. Currently, every blockchain is isolated. Which means they do not talk to each other. Interoperability is the technology that allows different chains to talk to each other. It is also at the core of the metaverse since all the assets in a game will be stored as an NFT. This is how you will be able to move your Avatar from Game X to Game Y easily.
What about payments?
You might have a certain type of crypto asset in your wallet and Game X only accepts Token X for payments. The industry standards will also allow you to complete your transaction using your Type Y assets and handle the rest for you without you worrying about exchanging your assets.
